Why Career
Wellbeing Matters
While all 昀椀ve
elements are
important, Gallup
places particular
emphasis on career
wellbeing.
Work can in昀氀uence
purpose, identity,
relationships and
daily energy, making
the quality of the
work experience a
major contributor
to overall wellbeing.
It is also an area
organisations can
directly in昀氀uence
through job design,
management quality
and opportunities for
employees to use
their strengths.
When career
wellbeing is strong,
it can create positive
momentum across
other areas of
life. High-quality
work experiences,
particularly those
supported by
engagement and
good management,
are also associated
with a lower risk
of negative mental
health outcomes.
The Business Case for Wellbeing
Wellbeing is not simply an employee bene昀椀t.
Gallup describes it as a predictor of organisational
outcomes including absenteeism, performance,
healthcare use, engagement and turnover. This
means wellbeing can act as an early indicator of
emerging organisational risk.
The 昀椀nancial implications can also be substantial.
Gallup estimates $20 million in lost opportunity
for every 10,000 employees due to low wellbeing
and reduced performance. Burnout is associated
with an estimated $322 billion in turnover and
lost productivity, while voluntary turnover driven
by burnout alone can cost organisations between
15% and 20% of total payroll annually.
Wellbeing also plays a role in organisational
resilience. Employees experiencing frequent
burnout are 63% more likely to be absent, while
burned-out employees are more than twice as
likely to look for another job. Low wellbeing can
reduce energy, focus and the capacity to perform
under pressure.
