Where to start
(if you want the biggest
impact fastest)
The entry zone
Shoes, keys, bags, mail. Clear
the surface, add one bowl for
keys, and a simple hook or
basket for the daily items.
The “light and doable”
declutter plan
You do not need to declutter your entire
life at once!
1) Pick a tiny target
Choose one of these:
• One drawer
• One shelf
• One bathroom cabinet
• Your “junk” bowl
Small wins build momentum.
2) Use the 4 pile method
Label four bags or boxes:
• Keep
• Donate or sell
• Recycle
• Bin
Decisions get easier when every item has
a destination.
3) Set a timer for 15 minutes
This is the secret weapon. Fifteen minutes
feels harmless, but it works. You can do it
while dinner is cooking.
4) Make “easy exits” for outgoing stuff
Put a donation box near the door, or
in the boot of your car. If you have to
organise a whole new system to donate,
you will not.
The wardrobe
Clothing is consistently
reported as a major clutter
category in Australian surveys.
Quick rule: if you would not
buy it again today, and you
have not worn it in a year, it is
a strong candidate to move on.
Paper piles
Do a ruthless sweep of:
• Old receipts
• Flyers
• Outdated manuals
Scan what matters, then
recycle the rest.
