One of the key trends in 2024
facing organisations is employee
engagement and wellbeing.
Research in leadership and social
psychology has found there is a
causal link between how employees
feel, and productivity; 昀椀nding that
50% of the global workforce is quiet
qui琀琀ing and 18% are loud qui琀琀ing,
i.e. sharing openly that they
are unhappy at work. Employee
engagement trends are at their
lowest rate in the past decade –
workers are feeling disconnected
and disengaged at work.
In the Robert Walters’ latest e-Guide – 2024
Top Talent Trends in Recruitment – from its
research with its clients and candidates across
Australia and New Zealand, it highlights that
the job market has changed – with 23% of the
workforce being tech-savvy Gen Z workers, the
biggest demographic in the workforce, taking
over the baby boomer cohort. Gen Z employees
have di昀昀erent approaches to ways of working
and work/life priorities, and while salary and
bene昀椀ts are important, how they work and how
they are managed has a greater in昀氀uence on their
engagement and wellbeing.
Power of positive
relationships at work
In a Harvard Business Review article on the Power
of Healthy Relationships at Work, evidence was
considered across a number of studies – showing
that happiness at work came down to positive
relationships, or connection. That as humans, we
place great value on our roles and relationships
to other groups. In the workplace, that means
employees want to be heard more than ever and
feel valued for our contributions. If we do not feel
valued or sense that our value isn’t acknowledged
by others in our group, it activates a stress response
and feels like a threat.
The Robert Walters’ e-guide found • 72% of employees believe leaders
showcasing empathy increases
motivation
• 87% of employees believe that a
leader showing empathy inspires
positive change within an organisation
• 92% of employees said company
culture has an impact on their decision
to remain with their current employer
